A day after expelled BJP leader Dayashankar Singh’s wife Swati Singh apprehended a life threat to her family, the city police provided security to her here on Saturday.
Initially, an armed police personnel has been deployed. Local intelligence unit (LIU) sleuths are conducting a survey for further deployment at her residence in Ashiana locality of the state capital.
Dayashankar Singh, who is facing arrest for his derogatory comment against Mayawati, is still on the run.
“We have deployed a police gunner for Swati Singh’s security soon after receiving request for security due to apprehension of a life threat from BSP leaders and supporters following her husband Dayashankar Singh’s controversial remark,” said Manzil Saini, senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Lucknow.
She said Swati demanded at least 10 police personnel for her family’s security. LIU officials were assessing the threat perception, she added.
Sources said the city police teams continued raiding different places in east Uttar Pradesh and Delhi to arrest Dayashankar who disappeared after an FIR was lodged for his derogatory remark comparing BSP chief Mayawati with a prostitute at Hazratganj police station on Wednesday. The police failed to track down Dayashankar amid rumours that he planned to surrender in court.
Dayashankar’s comment triggered a political storm ahead of the state polls early next year. Thousands of BSP supporters staged a protest in Lucknow on July 21, demanding his arrest.
The expelled BJP leader’s mother Tetra Devi had also lodged an FIR against BSP chief Mayawati and three other senior BSP leaders, including its national general secretary Naseemuddin Siddiqui, with Hazratganj police for making derogatory remarks against women members of Singh’s family.
