Students not sure whether LUSU polls will do any good

-

Despite student leaders pitching hard for Lucknow University Students Union (LUSU) polls, the students are in two minds as to whether or not the student union elections should be held. Most of the students are not much concerned with the issue as they want to concentrate on studies than take part in an activity that promotes ‘netagiri.’

LLB student Shweta Verma said that it was pointless having unions and holding and elections to them. “It’s sheer waste of time and energy which can be used for something productive, such as studies,” she said.

Juhi Tiwari, student of B Com said, “I don’t feel that union elections will prove very fruitful because to some extent such activity promotes ‘netagiri’ and hooliganism on the campus. The union heads bully other students and such behaviour should not be promoted in an academic atmosphere.”

Many students are not sure what changes student union poll will usher in. Kunal Handa, another student, said, “I don’t think the union elections will bring any change in the university. In fact , they will only worsen the scenario. Once student leaders get elected they don’t focus on work but bully others and misuse their power .”

The Lucknow University Students Union (LUSU) poll was last held in 2005. Now the university has agreed to hold direct elections of the student union. LU has requested CM Akhilesh Yadav to vacate the stay on the LUSU elections which has been there since 2012.

Some students, like Inderjeet and Shobit Pandey feel if the union elections are held, the exercise should be carried out in a disciplined way. The students and the authorities need to be very particular as to who they are choosing as a leader, as it can make or destroy the university.

However, there is a section of students which believes that student union elections will give them a chance to raise their grievances. Mohak Madhesiya, an LLB student said “It will definitely bring a change in the scenario which has continued since the past four or five years. Students in the university face many problems which go unreported . The problems of students can be presented in a better way by the student unions”.

When asked whether direct elections would be better or indirect, he said, “I believe that indirect elections would be better because they would allow a group to elect a panel of student leaders.”
