Crashes, jog see fruition as Froome wins third Tour title
PARIS: Briton Chris Froome cemented his status as one of the greatest Tour de France riders when he secured his third title on Sunday after a three-week rocky ride.
Germany’s Andre Greipel won the 21st and last stage, a 113km ride from Chantilly ending on the Champs Elysees in Paris.
The Team Sky rider survived two crashes and even a jog up a mountain road to add to his 2013 and 2015 triumphs to become the first rider to retain his title since Miguel Indurain in 1995.
American Lance Armstrong won seven titles in succession from 1999 but was erased from the winners’ list after admitting to doping. GUARDIOLA VS MOURINHO
BEIJING: Pep Guardiola pushed aside any suggestion he would not shake hands with archrival Jose Mourinho and insisted all would be friendly when Manchester City play Manchester United on Monday.
“We are polite guys, why not?” Guardiola said Sunday when asked if the pair would extend hands, despite an acrimonious rivalry which stretches back to 2010 when the Catalan had stewardship of Barcelona and Mourinho took the reins at Real Madrid.
“Why should we not shake hands? No reason why. He will want to win and so will I, that’s all,” the City boss said. HIGUAIN FACES HEAT
MILAN: Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain is feeling the wrath of the club’s fans following widespread reports he is about to jump ship and join bitter rivals Juventus.
Italian media have reported that Juventus, Italian champions for the past five seasons, are on the point of signing the prolific Argentina striker, who last season scored a record 36 Serie A goals. On Saturday, Napoli supporters gathered in the city centre to tear up pictures of the Argentine and set fire to replicas of his number nine shirt.
