The transport department is set to prepare an action plan to effectively check the growing number of road accidents on the Yamuna Expressway, which has earned the reputation of being the country’s deadliest road within a year of its getting operational four years ago.

The transport department bosses of the Agra and the Meerut zones as well as the Yamuna Express Industrial Development Authority (YEDA) officials are meeting in Ghaziabad early next week to discuss the issue in detail.

They will discuss and analyse the accident data pertaining to the expressway before suggesting measures to tackle the increasing menace.

“I have asked the local officials to hold a meeting with the YEDA staff on Monday and arrange a meeting at my level to find out a solution,” transport and road safety commissioner Ravindra Naik told the HT.

He said the department would soon chalk out a plan to control accidents on the Yamuna Expressway after finding out the causes of accidents, nature of accidents, nature of vehicles involved in the accidents etc.

A reply obtained by an Agra based NGO from the YEIDA some time back revealed that as many as 319 persons died in 2,194 mishaps that occurred on the 165-km Noida-Agra expressway since its inauguration in Agust 2015 till April 2015.

According to sources, overspeeding and tyre-bursts have been found to be the main reasons for the accidents. “The authorities have apparently failed to enforce road rules on this expressway which has caught everyone’s attention for its being the biggest killer road in the country,” said an official.
