LUCKNOW: New generation motorcycles – with more powerful engines and sporty look – are giving youths an adrenaline rush, making them perform stunts carelessly.

This is also a hazard for others like the cops trying to intercept those out on a risky ride, as had happened on Monday night when sub-inspector Shashank Dev Shukla was seriously injured after being hit by a stuntbiker while trying to stop him on the overbridge near Sahara Shaher in Gomti Nagar.

The incident has raised an alarm for cops to curb the bikers’ menace in the state capital.

“The issue is of serious concern, as it is not possible to approach every young man and warn him that stunts or racing should not be done on the roads. We are now going to be harsh in taking action against such stunt bikers, as the growing menace is causing problem for others. Nobody will be allowed to risk others’ lives,” emphasised A Satish Ganesh, IG, Lucknow Zone.

He said there is also a plan to enforce some precautionary measures to put brakes on stunt bikers.

“We are going install zigzag barriers on the stretches in Gomti Nagar and in other parts of the city – identified as hot spots of stunt bikers.

“The young motorcyclists’ stunts and speed force other commuters to swerve. Apart from the riders, lives of others are also at risk,” said a retired engineer Krishna Mohan.

With more under-age youngsters being provided bikes by their families, the problem of rash driving has increased manifold. The problem exists mainly on wide and smooth stretches of Gomti Nagar, Lohia Path and Shaheed Path, he said.

“Teenagers can be seen racing near marine drive in Gomti Nagar in morning hours, which also encourages such activities on busy roads,” he emphasised.

Dr Durvijay Rai, a medical practitioner, said, “Being a doctor, I regularly get cases wherein teenagers and young drivers get severely injured due to rash driving. Sometimes the cases are even fatal. I believe parents need to be more careful before allowing their children to drive bikes.”

STRICT PUNISHMENT VIABLE SOLUTION

“Strict punishment and penalty are the only viable solution,” said SP Singh, a former member of National Road Safety Council. He said the process of issuing driving licence should be tough. VICTIMS’ FAMILIES TO BE ROPED IN FOR AWARENESS

A Satish Ganesh, IG plans to approach families who have lost their loved ones in similar incidents and use them as cops’ voice to urge youngsters to not get involved in dangerous stunts.

“The victims’ families appeal would be more effective if they are ready to work with us on the issue and avert similar tragedies in future,” he said, adding, “We would target intermediate and undergraduate students, who often feel thrilled by getting involved in such activities.”
