Parents create ruckus at award ceremony after chief guest fails to turn up

LUCKNOW: Parents created a ruckus at the science and technology award ceremony meant for Class 10 and 12 students, who had scored 100% in science in 2013-14 board examinatio­ns.

The awardees were kept waiting for more than four hours for the arrival of the chief guest - science and technology minister (UP government) Narad Rai, who eventually did not make an appearance at all.

At 11am, the organiser informed the audience that due to unavoidabl­e reason the minister would arrive late. Yet the award ceremony did not begin till 2pm. This left parents angry who started creating a ruckus at the CV Raman Hall in Suraj Kund. They threatened to boycott the programme and alleged that they were called at 10am and the entire hall was full within half an hour.

“Angry parents started raising slogans against the organisers and threatened to boycott the award function,” said an awardee who does not wish to be identified. Joint director ID Ram tried to calm down the parents. But he found it difficult. Gauging the mood of angry parents, at 2.30pm the organisers decided to go ahead with the programme.

A total of 632 students of Class 10 and 178 students of Class 12 were given away demand draft of Rs 2,000. Students from different branches of City Montessori School bagged maximum honour. Other students were from La Martineire, Seth MR Jaipuria School, Lucknow Public College, St Francis College, St Mary Inter College and Spring Dale. ICSE students bagged maximum awards followed by CBSE and UP Board respective­ly.
