The liver and kidneys of a brain dead patient were retrieved at the King George’s Medical University and sent to hospitals in New Delhi via a special flight late on Thursday night.

A green corridor was made by the Lucknow police that helped the ambulance carrying the organs to travel swiftly from the medical university to the airport at around 11.20 pm.

The patient was a 48-yearold farmer RK Singh, a native of Harauni in Lucknow who sustained injuries after falling from the roof and was brought to KGMU Trauma Centre two days ago.

Singh was repairing an electrical fitting on the roof of a primary school on people’s request, as the school’s power supply was snapped and students had to study in humid atmosphere.

But he fell down and suffered a head injury.

“The patient was declared brain dead. We convinced the family to donate the organ and they gave their consent. Singh’s wife Malti Devi signed the consent form,” said Prof Abhijeet Chandra, in charge of the organ retrieval programme at the medical university.

A special flight flew the organ to New Delhi for transplant operation. The liver was sent to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, a superspeciality hospital for liver and biliary diseases in New Delhi. One kidney was sent to AIIMS, New Delhi and another to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, New Delhi, said Dr Ved Prakash, medical superintendent, KGMU. Surgery team comprised of Dr Abhijit Chandra, Dr Vivek, Dr Manmeet, Dr Parvez, Dr Pradeep Joshi and Dr Saket Kumar. On July 28 also, organs from a brain dead patient were retrieved.
