Cakes, birthday songs and felicitation of those who took care of four little ones turning one year old- Thursday was special for visitors as the Lucknow Zoo celebrated the first birthday of four lion cubs born here. Their survival had the zoo staff elated so much that they decided to celebrate the occasion.

“Our efforts gave results and Thursday was their first birthday. The entire staff is happy,” said zoo director Anupam Gupta. These cubs were born to lioness Vasundhara on September 1, 2015. It was after a gap of 30 years that four cubs were born together and they could survive as well at the Lucknow Zoo. The birthday celebrations started at 11 am and events were held near the enclosure.

School students who came to visit the zoo were happy to find birthday of cubs being celebrated. The zoo staff also conducted ‘meet the keeper’ programme where students visiting the zoo were allowed to interact with the keepers who took care of the cubs during the year. “With such interactive programme we aim to make people familiar with the nature and animals, both wild and domestic. Such events satisfy the queries in the minds of curious children which otherwise would remain as queries only,” said Gupta.

The Royal Bengal Tiger that was caught from Mailani in Lakhimpur Kheri and brought to the Lucknow Zoo has been kept under observation. At present, the animal has been kept in the zoo hospital in isolation. Zoo director Anupam Gupta said that the tiger had killed four people in the past one month and was caught a day before.
