Eight petrol bombs were recovered from a room at Acharya Narendra Dev hostel on the BHU premises during a search by a team of university wardens accompanied by a police team on Friday.

Besides, an iron rod, a hookah, cigarettes and some other materials were also recovered from other rooms of the hostel.

A bomb disposal squad defused the bombs. A case has been registered with Lanka police against two students in this connection.

Dean faculty of social science Manjit Chaturvedi said nearly 122 students of the hostel filed a written complaint on August 26, alleging that inmates of room numbers 27, 17, 66, 79, 103, 104, and 72 threatened and harassed them.

Following the complaint, all seven rooms were sealed on August 27.

Chaturvedi further said a few inmates requested him that they wanted to take out the articles of their daily use lying in the sealed rooms. So, he formed a committee of wardens to carry out a search of the rooms and also informed the proctorial board about it.

The committee along with proctorial board officials and police personnel started searching the rooms by breaking seals. During the search, the eight live bombs were recovered from room number 27. In addition, an iron knuckle from room number 103 and some empty liquor bottles were recovered from room number 66. A hookah and other objectionable materials were also recovered.

Chaturvedi, who was accompanying the team, immediately informed police. Circle officer Bhelupur Rajesh Srivastava reached the spot and called the bomb disposal squad which reached the spot and defused the bombs. The team members handed over all recovered items to the police team.

Chaturvedi said a case had been filed against students Rituraj Singh and Rahul Singh, the occupants of room number 27. Room number 104, 17, 79, 72 were allotted to Jayant Sharma, Saurabh Rai, Hemprakash Singh and Satyam Mishra and Satyam Rai respectively.

“This is first time in the history of BHU that 122 students filed a written complaint against the hostel inmates for harassing them. Because of their complaint, the seven rooms were sealed and later searched in which eight live petrol bombs were recovered,” confirmed Chaturvedi.

Moreover, the BHU administration has suspended 26 students for their alleged involvement in the violent incident that occurred late on Wednesday night.

All their academic facilities have been suspended and their entry to the campus has been banned. Eight more students have been expelled from south campus of the university, said BHU spokesman Dr Rajesh Kumar Singh.
