A 64-year-old former cop tried to end his life by slitting his throat near the chief minister’s residence on Kalidas Marg here on Saturday afternoon. He was immediately rushed to hospital where his condition was stated to be critical.

The victim Kailash Singh, resident of Ghazipur, was sacked from the police force in 2001 after serving as a constable for around 30 years. His pension and other funds were withheld due to the termination and he was running from pillar to post to get the dues cleared. He was trying to meet the CM to share his problem and get the work done.

Some onlookers told the cops that he was requesting the police personnel deployed on Kalidas Marg to allow him to meet the CM and slit his throat with a knife apparently after being denied entry into the VVIP corridor.

Security personnel immediately alerted the cops at Gautampalli police station after spotting him bleeding profusely. He he was rushed to the civil hospital but was later shifted to the KGMU’s trauma centre where he was operated upon late in the evening. The doctors said that his condition was critical and kept him under observation for the next 48 hours.

District police spokesman, Alok Pathak said the victim’s family had been informed about the incident and they would reach here by Sunday morning. He said the victim was unable to speak so the actual reason behind this step was unknown and probe in the matter was on.
