A junior resident doctor at the BHU trauma centre repeatedly goes beyond the call of duty to help poor patients.

Not only does he collect funds required for their treatment, but he has also created a Facebook page Andleeb (song of life) where appeals are issued so that help for the poor patients comes in.

The patients also get in touch with him through the FB page. Dr Meet Minare, the junior resident, is currently doing the doctor of medicine (MD) course in anaesthesia from Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

The 28-year-old doctor pays special attention to the poor patients and takes care of them even if he is off duty. He went out of his way to help around half-a-dozen poor patients in the last three years. He gets requests for help from poor patients on the Facebook page that he has created.

“Andleeb literally means nightingale that sings at the crack of dawn and life is a song. Therefore, I chose the name,” said Dr Minare who belongs to Bhopal where his father, a retired IB officer, lives. His sister, too, is a doctor. He embarked on his mission in 2013 when he came to know about the critical illness of a 22-year-old women student of medical science. Both her kidneys had failed and she had no funds. She lived in Sukanya hostel.

“I was stunned when I came to know of her condition. She was doing diploma in gynaecology in Ayurveda. I decided to help her. I appealed to the students to help save her life. The students and a few professors contributed generously. We collected funds. Later, I persuaded her mother to donate a kidney,” he recalled.

The young woman was admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, where she was treated. But she died. “When I came to know about her death, I was upset for a few days. I overcame the trauma and moved forward. I resolved to live for others,” he said.

In the meantime, he got another request for help, this time from the brother of an engineering student Ajay Kumar Pal whose platelet count dipped.

Sanjay Kumar Pal’s letter reads, “My brother Ajay Kumar Pal is a second year student at IERT, Allahabad. He is battling for life since his platelet count has decreased. He needs blood. Moreover, we are running out of money.” The youth was admitted to Sir Sundar Lal Hospital, BHU and Dr Minare collected funds for his treatment. The engineering student has recovered fully.

“Dr Minare treated me like a brother. There are no words to express one’s gratitude to him,” Ajay Pal said.

Dr Minare, who is yet to receive official recognition for his effort, wants the affluent sections of the society to come forward in helping the poor patients.
