CM to lay Kanpur metro foundation on October 4

-

Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav would lay the foundation stone for Kanpur metro rail on October 4.

This would be the second metro rail project on which the ruling party would be starting work after Lucknow even though the Centre is yet to grant its formal nod to the project.

On February 16 this year, the state government had given green-signal to the Kanpur and Varanasi metro rail projects. “We have sent the detailed project report of Kanpur metro to the union ministry of urban development and expect to get a formal clearance soon,” said an official associated with the project.

The estimated cost of Kanpur metro rail is Rs 13,400 crore. The service has been proposed on two corridors of 33 kilometres. Construction work would start on the IIT-Jhakarkati route first.

The first corridor would be of 24 km from IIT to Kalyanpur, Rawatpur, Motijheel, Navin Market, Bada Chauraha, Phoolbagh, Central railway station, via Jhakarkati Bus terminal to Naubasta. The second corridor would be nine kilometres long. It would start from Agriculture University and reach Barra-8 via Rawatpur, Kakadev and Vijaynagar Chauraha.

Fourteen metro stations have been proposed on the 15 km overhead stretch of first corridor, eight have been planned for the nine-kilometre-long underground route. Likewise, on the second corridor of nine kilometres, five stations would be built on the 4.5 Km overhead route and four metro stations on the 4.5 km underground route.
