BAREILLY: As many as 68 students of a government primary school were taken ill after being vaccinated at the school in Pilibhit on Thursday.

The students complained of nausea and were rushed to the district hospital.

“Over 100 students of primary school, Kalyanpur were given DPT vaccine. Some vaccinated students fell ill because the medical staff failed to follow the required procedure during vaccination.” said chief medical officer (CMO) of Pilibhit Omprakash Singh who visited the school after the incident.

The CMO suspended the ANM (auxillary nurse midwifery) who was in charge of the vaccination.

According to medical practitioners, DPT vaccine, regularly administered to children, shows temporary side effects which include nausea, fever, pain and vomiting. Common analgesics like paracetamol are given after DPT vaccination to provide relief. The vaccination team which administered DPT at the primary school allegedly forgot to provide these tablets.

“The children were vaccinated in the afternoon and were soon taken ill. We informed the hospital staff and took them to hospital,” said a parent.

“Four ambulances were sent to bring the students to the district hospital and medical staff was alerted,” said the CMO.

“They were taken care of and most of them were discharged by 8 pm,” he added.

District magistrate Masoom Ali has asked the CMO to form a medical panel to investigate the matter. “I have appointed two doctors to look into the matter and the report will be submitted to the DM by Monday,” said the CMO.
