LUCKNOW: Deer and Sambar will soon be spotted at Etawah Deer Safari, as chief minister Akhilesh Yadav will formally kick-start his dream project on October 6.

Coming up in the reserve fisher forest area of Lion Safari in Etawah, the Deer Safari will spread across 30-hectare area and start with about 50 deer from Kanpur and Lucknow zoos.

“We have received permission from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) to shift animals and keep them in quarantine for some time,” said deputy director of the safari Dr Anil K Patel.

As per the plan, those animals which are sensitive to new surroundings will be kept in quarantine for a few weeks and then left in the safari. However, the visitors will not be able to see the animals before November end.

“Five male and 10 female spotted deer along with four male and six female Sambar will be brought to Etawah,” said Patel.

“Once the quarantine period is over, we will again ask the Central Zoo Authority to give permission to leave the deer in safari area. A review by CZA is mandatory before the animals are sent to the safari area,” he said. The Deer Safari will be a part of Etawah Lion Safari and is considered to be one of the dream projects of the chief minister. Separate safaris for leopard, antelope and bear will also come up in future.

Sambar is a large deer, native to the Indian subcontinent, southern China and Southeast Asia, while spotted deer is a nocturnal and endangered species.
