Scientists from different institutions participated at the eighth convention of Institute of Smart Structure and System (ISSS) held at Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IITK) on Thursday.

Speaking at convention the scientists invariably said that the smart sensors were the future of smart technology and they would help to perform various functions in the most accurate manner. The sensors would not only provide information but would also take appropriate decisions considering the situation.

Former advisor to the defence minister Padam Vibhushan VK Atrey expressed his concern over the poor sensor techniques in the country and said there was immediate need to gear up technology for its contribution to defence and health sector.

He said it was encouraging that technical institutes were working hard on sensor technology but unless the industries came forward to use the technique, this could not be enriched.

Vibhushan stressed upon development on demand oriented sensor techniques to meet the future demands.

A scientist of defence materials and store research and development establishment (DMSRDE) Alok Srivastava said that during war, the smart sensors could provide information in advance about the use of biological or chemical weapons by the enemy.

These sensors could also detect the dangerous chemicals hidden in the ground during the field operations.

Senior professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IIS) Dr S Goplakrishnan said that the scientists of the institute have developed sensors with which the distance of the ships and their status could be known which would soon be used in defence.
