GANDHI VAT

-

On Gokhle Marg lies an old banyan tree. It is located on the premises of the house of Congress leader and former Member of Parliament Sheela Kaul. The tree bears a small plaque that reads — ‘This sapling was planted by Mahatma Gandhi in 1936’. “But not many know that the place is rooted in history,” said Praveen, adding, “The sapling was planted when Bapu visited the Kaul Family in March 1936 along with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru too planted a mango sapling on the same premises, which is now a tree in full bloom. The Kaul family nurtured the tree, ensuring that it grew over the years to provide shade to passers-by.” He added, “Interestingly, most of those passing by the road may not know the history of this tree”.
