Prime Minister Narendra Modi will gift schemes worth several thousand crores to his parliamentary constituency during his visit to Varanasi on Monday.

Modi will lay the foundation of several schemes, including the City Gas Distribution (CGD) project that is estimated to cost `1,000 crore.

It will be executed by GAIL (India) Limited, the country’s leading natural gas company, and connect Varanasi to the natural gas grid of India through the ‘Urja Ganga’ project aimed at realising the vision of Modi to bring the eco-friendly fuel to eastern India.

M Ravindran, director (Human Resources), GAIL and Dr Ashutosh Karnatak, director (Projects), GAIL said that the city gas distribution project was expected to connect 50,000 households with piped natural gas (PNG) and supply compressed natural gas (CNG) to 20,000 vehicles through 20 CNG stations.

About 800 inch-km of steel and medium density polyethylene (MDPE) pipeline will be laid in Varanasi for the gas project. Natural gas will come to the city through the 2,540 km Jagdishpur–Haldia and Bokaro – Dhamra Natural Gas Pipeline project (JHBDPL), also known as ‘Urja Ganga’.

This is the first time in the country that a city gas distribution project is being taken up along with a major gas pipeline project — the JHBDPL. The pipeline project is being taken up with an investment of Rs 12,940 crore. The central government will bear 40 % of the cost — Rs 5,176 crore, reflecting its commitment in realising the project.

In addition, Modi will lay the foundation stone of other projects, including perishable cargo (estimated cost Rs 4 crore), doubling and electrification of Varanasi-Allahabad rail line (estimated cost Rs 588 crore). He will dedicate 765/400 KV GIS Varanasi power station (estimated cost 758 crore) and expansion projects of Diesel Locomotive Works (phase 1). The PM will release a commemorative postage stamp on Varanasi city and inaugurate the Varanasi postal region. Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) public relations officer Pradeep Mishra said, “The first phase of the DLW expansion project has been completed successfully by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited. The PM would dedicate it to the nation.”

The PM laid foundation of the project on December 25, 2014.

He would address a huge gathering on the occasion. The Special Protection Group (SPG) is keeping a tight vigil on the venue — the DLW ground. Eight companies each of provincial armed constabulary and paramilitary forces have been deployed here.

Governor Ram Naik, union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Manoj Sinha, Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey, Anupriya Patel and UP minister Brahmashankar Triapthi would be present on the occasion. State BJP president Keshav Prasad Maurya has also been invited.
