Favourites Haryana eves retain handball trophy

Defending champions Haryana brushed aside hosts Uttar Pradesh 19-12 to win the 39th Junior National Women’s Handball Championsh­ip, at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium here on Sunday.

Braving a chilly winter afternoon, Haryana girls dominated the proceeding­s from the very start and were leading by 10-4 at the lemon break. Within three minutes time, they first managed 4-1 lead and then made 7-4.

Former runners-up Uttar Pradesh though staged a good show after a change in the ends and managed to narrow the lead, they failed to pose any threat to the winners. Shalini Agarwal top scored five, followed by Sapna and Annu, who shared four goals between them. But for Haryana, lanky Sushma (8 goals) and Prachi (7 goals) set up the win. Asha scored three goals.

BIG WINS

NDBG Group and Dream Builders XI notched up convincing wins to collect full points in the Lucknow Premier Cricket League here on Sunday. NDBG Group defeated DSC XI by seven wickets, whereas Dream Builders XI beat SIPS Hospital by five wickets. Needing 139 to win in 20 overs, NDGB Group romped home in 17 overs, losing three wickets. Gurpreet struck highest 41. BRIEF SCORES DSC XI 138 for 8 in 20 overs (Sanjay Yadav 65, Subash Sahani 24, Vivek Kumar 2 for 17) lost to NDGB Group 141 for 3 in 17 overs (Gurpreet Singh 41, Karan Upadhyay 29, Dherya Kapoor 29).

SIPS Hospital 143 for 9 in 20 overs (Pallav 68, Sandeep Pandey 32, Vaibhav Vishkarma 21, Shalabh Srivastava 2 for 22, Anurag Singh 2 for 24) lost to Dream Builders XI 144 for 5 in 19.2 overs (Shalabh Srivastava 67, Rohit Yadav 37, Murtaza 3 for 22).

Favourites West Bengal and Gujarat won the men and women teams titles, respective­ly of the 32nd All India Postal Table Tennis Tournament, at the UP Table Tennis Complex here on Sunday. West Bengal defeated defending champions Assam 3-1, whereas Gujarat women’s beat West Bengal also by 3-1. In the women’s singles quarterfin­als, Sayani Bose beat Konnoki Mahanta 3-0, Rajni Gupta beat Vinita Shukla 3-1, Sugandha Roy beat Iti Sharma 3-0, SK Joshi beat Sharqui Abbasi 3-0, Prasanna Joshi Parikh beat Anupa 3-1, Trania Mondal beat Syed Karishma Azmi 3-0, Divya Gohil beat R Krishna Veni 3-0, and Murchanna Gohan beat M Surekha 3-1.
