City lawyers thrashed former Noida engineer-in-chief Yadav Singh and his supporters in the district court here on Monday when the supporters allegedly manhandled media persons and lawyers.

Singh, who is facing several corruption and money laundering cases, was brought here from Dasna jail, Ghaziabad to be presented before district judge Rajendra Singh (First), who remanded him to 14-day judicial custody and sent him to Lucknow jail. The CBI had arrested Singh in February 2016.

According to reports, after the district judge remanded Singh to judicial custody and he was being taken out of the court on a wheelchair, media persons began clicking his pictures.

Taking exception to this, his supporters manhandled the media persons and, in the process, some lawyers got pushed around. The enraged lawyers then thrashed Singh and his supporters. Cops had a tough time in restraining the agitated lawyers and after much effort managed to take Singh to the ambulance parked outside the court.

Enforcement Directorate officials would now interrogate Singh in connection with money laundering cases. It was in 2002, during the tenure of Mayawati, that Singh’s clout came to light in political circles. But, the corruption cases against him came up during the present Samajwadi Party government tenure.

Singh enjoyed immense clout in political and bureaucratic circles, first in the

Mayawati government (May 2002-August 2003) and then in the SP government (2003 to 2007). He also held sway during the Mayawati government from 2007 to 2012 and also in the present dispensation.

Raids carried out by the income tax department in November 2014 found that Singh had executed projects worth Rs 8,000 crore in Noida in his 12-year tenure at the Noida authority. Also, raids on his house and various properties uncovered Rs 10 crore cash and two kg gold and diamond jewellery, which were allegedly unaccounted for.
