Flare-up in Bareilly over renovation of temple
Renovation work in a temple in Parsakhera area of Bareilly sparked tension between Hindus and Muslims on Sunday afternoon.
Police halted the work and deployed a team to ensure peace in the area.
“The incident occurred over some construction work, which was being carried out at a religious place. People of the other community (Muslims) opposed the construction and complained to the police about it. A team of CB Ganj police station was sent to the spot and it is investigating the matter,” said Sameer Saurabh, SP, Bareilly.
The work was being undertaken to renovate a small temple. The place is located in an area that has a mixed population of Hindus and Muslims. Several Muslims gathered near the place and opposed the renovation work.
This led to a standoff between people of both communities. Police were called in considering the volatility of the situation.
The work was reportedly being carried out without any NoC from the administration. “An NoC is a must in case of these kind of works, so we have asked them to stop the construction work,” said the SP.
On Monday, the police held a meeting with representatives of both sides. “We have asked people of both sides to ensure peace and take due permission before undertaking any construction work at the temple,” said Saurabh.
Police further decided to deploy a team in the area. “Everything is under control, but a police team will remain there for a few more days,” added the SP.
