In a shocking incident in Mattu-Ka-Pura village in Pratapgarh, some miscreants chopped off the nose of a woman, allegedly because she had not voted in favour of a particular candidate.

They also thrashed her husband and children. The injured were admitted to the district hospital.

Mattu Ka Purwa village falls under Raniganj constituency. The woman’s husband Krishna Patel said their neighbour, who was a political activist, had asked him and his wife Ranjeeta to vote for his candidate in the assembly elections.

However, Krishna and Ranjeeta cast their votes in favour of another candidate.

Their neighbour was enraged when he came to know through other villagers that Krishna and Ranjeeta had not voted for his candidate.

He barged into Krishna’s house with his accomplices on Monday afternoon and attacked the couple and their children Vishnu, 15, and Puja, 14. The mis- creants chopped off Ranjeeta’s nose with an axe and fled the scene when other villagers came to their rescue, Krishna alleged. Villagers called the ambulance and admitted the injured to the district hospital. They also informed the police control room.

Krishna claimed that his neighbour was pressurising him and his wife to vote in favour of his candidate for the past several months and had also threatened him with dire consequences if he refused.

SHO Mandhata Uma Shankar Yadav said the injured and the accused were close relatives and the exact reason behind the attack was still to be ascertained.

However, Yadav said that action would be taken against the accused after receiving a complaint from the injured.
