The state’s most VVIP police station—Hazratganj— had the most VVIP guest on Thursday morning when none other than chief minister Aditya Nath Yogi paid a surprise visit to take stock of the ‘khakhi bandobast’ in maintaining law and order.

Sub-inspector of Hazratganj police station Mool Chandra Verma was standing in full attention as the saffron clad CM questioned him, ‘Kitne cases darj kiye ab tak? Kya sabke

THE CM STAYED AT THE POLICE STATION FOR 30 MINUTES AND INQUIRED ABOUT THE STATUS OF FIRS LODGED THERE

mukadme darj kar lete ho (How many cases you have registered till now? Has everybody’s complaint been registered?)” to which the S-I promptly replied, “Sir 288 cases (have been registered) so far this year.” The S-I also nodded his head and told the CM that everybody’s complaint had been registered.

Verma’s answer brought smile on the CM’s face and he turned towards Director General of Police (DGP) Javeed Ahmad and SSP Lucknow Manzil Saini accompanying him during his visit. The CM’s office, Lok Bhawan secretariat, Vidhan Bhawan and the Governor House all come under the purview of Hazratganj police station. The CM, who has kept the home department with himself, stayed at the police station for about 30 minutes and inquired about the status of various FIRs lodged there.

Later he also visited the Mahila thana (women police station), crime branch office and cyber crime cell office located on the police station premises.

At the Mahila thana, he asked the SSP about the arrangements for the stay of women cops and also the number of women cops in the state capital and all over UP. The CM’s question was significant in the backdrop of BJP’s poll promise to raise three women police battalions in the state capital for security of women.

Infrastructure for crime investigation

At the crime branch, he asked the ASP about their working and requirement in improving infrastructure there. The CM then asked the DGP to make a proposal for the crime branch requirements that would help cops in investigating cases more rapidly and effectively.

At the cyber crime cell too, Aditya Nath questioned cops about their working in women harassment cases. “Internet calling aur Facebook ke jariye fraud aur mahilao ko pareshan karne wale ghatnao me kaise kaam karte hai aap log (How do you crack cases where women are harassed through internet calling and facebook?)” the CM asked sub-inspector Vijay Siroi of the cyber crime cell.

While moving out of the cyber cell, he told the DGP to make adequate arrangements for drinking water, visitors’ room etc in police offices across the state. The CM also directed the cops to keep police stations clean and free from paan stains.

Meanwhile, cops vied with each other to get a glimpse of the CM and many were seen clicking his photographs as he moved about in the police station. A constable Brijesh Kumar said, “This CM is certainly going to do something. I have not come across such a polite and simple political leader.” Another constable pledged to quit ‘paan masala’ in keeping with the CM’s directive.

Aditya Nath Yogi is the second UP chief minister to visit a police station for surprise inspection. Earlier BSP chief Mayawati had visited Qaiserbagh police station to review the police working on February 27, 2011 and stayed there for over 15 minutes.
