LUCKNOW: It was ‘drama, action and arrest’ at the Ghazipur police station on Tuesday night. A drunken youth reached here at 10pm and requested cops to arrest him.

He argued why they were not arresting him as he had entered the police station in an inebriated condition.

The cops, however, chased him out believing he was drunk and mentally unstable. But this casual approach sent the policemen into a tizzy when they found that a police jeep parked at the entrance was missing. CCTV cams revealed that the youth had driven away the jeep.

Though the youth was traced and the police vehicle recovered within 12 hours, the dramatic sequence of events exposed cops’ negligence in leaving a government vehicle with keys.

“I was shocked when informed that a police jeep is stolen from outside the police station. The jeep was parked negligently with the keys outside the police station that allowed the youth to take it away,” said Dinesh Puri, circle officer, Ghazipur police station. He said he will initiate action against the driver who had parked the vehicle negligently.

The CO said he immediately zeroed in on the youth after coming to know about the incident.

The youth Sharad Tiwari was traced on Wednesday morning. He revealed that he had abandoned the jeep on the roadside near his house in Sarvoday Nagar, around one kilometer from the police station.

He said the youth is pursuing graduation from a city college and belongs to a well-to-do family.

He said Sharad’s father Ramesh Tiwari runs a dairy farm and some more businesses.

“When quizzed, the youth said he was afraid of going home as he was heavily drunk so he planned to spend the night at the police station. He thought police would certainly book him for some minor offence when he creates drama and then easily get away by apologising for his act,” said the circle officer.

“However, now he is booked in a case of theft, he added.
