Murals to offer glimpses of Kashi’s heritage
VARANASI : Murals on boundary walls at various locations here will give glimpses of Varanasi and its heritage to tourists as soon as they enter the city. The novel initiative is part of the central government’s Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY).
Municipal commissioner Shirhari Pratap Shahi said, “Tourists will get glimpses about Kashi’s legendary figures, its ghats, temples and its heritage as soon as they enter the city. As many as 24 locations have been selected under HRIDAY.”
Murals of legendry figures of the Banaras Gharana of music, seers such as Sant Ravidas and Kabir, temples, iconic ghats, litterateurs and the city culture have already come up at a few locations like Kabir Chaura, Naati Imali and Bharat Milap Ground.
Murals depicting noted litterateur Munshi Premchand and poet Bharatendu Harishchandra have been carved out on the Queens College boundary wall near the Lahurabeer intersection. In all, 24 locations have been selected for the murals.
As many as 86 locations, including Dashashwamedh Ghat, Durgakund, the Sankatmochan area and the Godowlia Chowk will get a facelift under the project. It also focuses on construction, repair and thematic development of 34 heritage roads.
