AS HEMINGWAY PUT IT, THERE IS NO FRIEND AS LOYAL AS A BOOK

- Bidyut Kumar Sanyal

Reading books is a good hobby. As Ernest Hemingway put it, there is no friend as loyal as a book. However, this saying didn’t touch my heart earlier. But, a few days ago, at a Jodhpur heritage home, I got an opportunity to read some books. I was waiting for the train bound to Delhi and with a few hours left for boarding, I began reading some interesting books and got a taste of the joy that I had never experienced so far. That’s how I discovered the pleasure of reading books.

Read books, not just to gain knowledge but also to enjoy the experience. Author Stephen King had once said: “Books are unique portable magic.” It’s perfectly put by the author. While reading, I came across a book by Osho, which spoke of love and the ego. The author had, very eloquently and in simple language, made us understand the meaning of love and ego. Love is happy when it gives. Ego is happy when it takes. Love is like a tree rooted in deep soil. The thought itself was excellent.

I also came across the meaning of the word ‘family’, where love is furthered in the family. This short experience of reading opened my eyes. So, now at leisure, I generally engage myself with reading, and the whole world comes alive. Every book has a meaning and it imparts knowledge to all. And good lessons always manage to nourish our hearts. Inner Voice comprises contributions from our readers. The views expressed are personal Innervoice@hindustantimes.com n
