Soon, FIR cell at dist police office: New SSP

Once FIR is registered here, police station incharge concerned will have to explain why the complaint was not taken

To ensure 100% FIR registration, 2005 batch IPS officer Deepak Kumar, who took charge as the senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Lucknow on Friday, announced that an FIR cell would be set up at the district police office soon. “FIRs will be registered at this cell if they are not registered at the police station level,” said Kumar.

He added that FIRs regarding chain/ purse snatching, vehicle theft, house burglary and theft will be registered at the cell on nil crime numbers and later will be sent to the police stations concerned for further investigation.

“The police station in-charges will also be summoned to explain why the FIRs were not registered at the station level,” he said, adding that the practice would ensure 100% complaint registration.

The SSP said the initiative would help improve the police department’s image too as the common man wouldn’t have to run from pillar to post for getting FIRs registered. “It will also lead to police personnel treating the complainants properly,” said Kumar.

He added that crimes against women were on his priority list and efforts would be made to make the city safe for women. “Police personnel will be sensitised to deal with such crimes with sensitivity and ensure stern action. Besides, mapping will be done of crime-prone areas and extra police personnel will be deployed on such stretches,” he said.

Kumar said that traffic management also needed improvement and that he would soon hold a meeting with the traffic police officers to decongest city roads and chalk out further strategy. “The authorities of the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation will also be roped in as most major traffic diversions were being done due to metro work. In addition, encroachments on roads will also be removed to ensure smooth traffic flow,” the SSP said.
