The King George’s Medical University (KGMU) will soon constitute a hospital revolving fund (HRF) to provide medicines at cheap rates to both admitted patients as well as those coming to the OPD.

Prof Ajai Singh has been made in-charge of the project and a detailed report will be prepared soon.

The project is expected to promote the use of generic medicine. It is also aimed at benefiting the patients and the university system by ensuring better accountability, monitoring, resource utilisation, uninterrupted medicine supply, and quality along with best prices.

“This is KGMU’s initiative to make services and medicines available to all at affordable rates. Although we provide free treatment, we have decided to keep drug prices low even for those visiting the the OPD,” said spokesperson, Prof NS Verma.

On Friday, a meeting of the hospital advisory committee was held in which the vice chancellor’s decision to bring down the cost of diagnosis and other on-campus facilities was upheld.

As soon as the HRF proposal is ready it will be accepted by the university’s statutory body, and funds will be made available to purchase medicines. Under HRF, any profit made is transferred to the patients.

At present, there is a welfare society on KGMU campus that provides medicines to patients at discounted rates. The medicines are dispensed through multiple counters at different departments.
