With the aim of ending shortage of teachers in government medical colleges in UP, the retirement age of medical teachers is likely to be raised to 70 from the present 65 years. The medical education department has prepared a proposal in this regard that will be discussed in the cabinet meeting for its approval.
“The decision has to be taken by the state cabinet before any such proposal can be implemented,” said Anita Bhatnagar Jain, additional chief secretary, medical education. Several medical institutes in the state lack adequate number of teachers and where the number of teachers is sufficient, increasing the number or the retirement age will help add more PG students.
At some medical colleges, up to 20% vacancies have been reported and often such institutes get warning from the Medical Council of India (MCI). The medical education directorate on Monday also formed a coordination committee to look after the merger of the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute with the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. The merger of two establishments has been pending for over two years.
The MCI has approved admission of students on 150 MBBS seats at the institute from the upcoming session only but for this the merger is necessary. The new committee will look after the transfer of property and equipment, shifting of teaching and non-teaching staff on voluntary basis as also the vacancies that need to be filled.
