LUCKNOW: The opposition, its tally reduced after the assembly polls, is getting ready to corner the Yogi Adityanath government when the first session of the state legislature begins with governor Ram Naik’s address here on Monday. The session, which is likely to end on May 22, has been convened as the state government proposes to table the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill to get the same ratified by the state legislature.

Governor Ram Naik will address a joint sitting of the two Houses of the state legislature at 11am on Monday.

Though the governor has often urged the leaders of major political parties to allow him to deliver his complete address, the opposition appears unwilling to oblige. Naik had recently told chief minister Yogi Adityanath to cut down his address to a ‘readable’ length to enable him to read it out in full before a joint sitting of the two Houses.

The newly constituted 17th Vidhan Sabha has now decided to adopt a new protocol to be accorded to the governor. So, the national anthem will be played when the governor reaches or leaves the Vidhan Sabha hall to give his address.

The BJP and its allies have a strength of 325 members in the 403-member house.

Besides focusing on the law and order situation, the opposition is likely to press for a complete loan waiver for farmers during the governor’s address and also later.

An indication in this regard came at the main opposition Samajwadi Party’s legislature party meeting attended by former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav as its leader.

The BSP and the Congress too are working out their own strategies to raise issues concerning law and order and farmers. Congress Legislature Party leader Ajay Kumar ‘Lallu’ has convened a meeting at 9.30am on Monday to discuss the party’s strategy.

Meanwhile, Vidhan Sabha Hridaya Narain Dixit speaker called an-all party meeting on Sunday to seek cooperation of all the political parties in the smooth functioning of the House.

A qualitative debate will be beneficial for people of the state, he said.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath, who wants the state assembly to function like Parliament and have at least 90 sittings in a year, assured the BJP government’s complete cooperation for a constructive debate on various issues in the house.

He urged the members to work with a ‘positive’ attitude for the benefit of people of UP.

Minister for parliamentary affairs Suresh Khanna said the house cannot function smoothly without opposition’s cooperation.

The governor’s communication about the appointment of leader of opposition is likely to come up in the assembly.
