Eight killed as building collapses in Mumbai

MUMBAI: At least eight people died and around 40 others were trapped after a four-storey building collapsed in Ghatkopar here on Tuesday, civic officials said. Fourteen fire engines, one rescue van and an ambulance have been rushed to the spot.

At least eight people died and around 40 others were trapped after a four-storey building collapsed in Ghatkopar here on Tuesday, civic officials said. According to sources, a nursing home was being run on the ground floor of the building, Sai Darshan, situated at Damodar Park on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg.

Fourteen fire engines, one rescue van and an ambulance have been rushed to the spot.

At least 10 persons were also injured in the mishap, a senior police official said. S

earch operations are still on to extricate the people, many of whom are elderly and women, feared trapped under the concrete rubble.

The building housed around 15 families and was not put in the category of dilapidate­d structures. According to a local resident, it was a 35-year-old building.

“Entire ground and four floored residentia­l building collapsed. About 30 to 40 persons suspected to be trapped,” The city’s chief fire officer, Prabhat Rahangdale, told AFP.

According to fire brigade officials, nearly 15 people have been pulled out of the debris so far and referred to nearby hospitals.

Eyewitness­es said in the morning they heard a loud sound, similar to that of lightning since it is monsoon season.
