LUCKNOW : Application forms for the six- month certificate course in goods and services tax (GST) at the University of Lucknow (LU) will be available from July 26 to August 2 at the office of the dean, faculty of commerce.

With this, the LU has become the first university in the state to launch the course. The decision to start the GST course was taken at the vice chancellors’ conference held earlier this month. It was decided to include GST in the commerce and management curriculum to create a workforce of GST-trained professionals.

With a view to encouraging more students to opt for the course, the university has kept the cost of the application form relatively low at Rs 10. The course fee is Rs 2000 only and the number of seats available is 60. Admission will be done on the first come first basis. It will be a 4-credit course and include 2 credits on skill development/training and 2 credits for theory. The dean, faculty of commerce, was asked to run the six-month course, said LU spokesperson, NK Pandey.

“The LU is starting the course because of the huge impact of the GST on the common man in the country. Keeping in mind the citizens’ ignorance or misplaced knowledge about the GST, it becomes an important duty of the university to educate common citizens as part of university’s extension programme,” Pandey said.

“It was important to add GST in the syllabus to help students understand the new tax regime. The GST has been rolled out in India from July 1, 2017. The state government was of the opinion that the GST would be a strong driver of growth,” an LU official said.
