LUCKNOW : With 2017 marking 75 years of the Quit India Movement and seven decades of the country’s independence, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has instructed varsities to organise an on-campus pledge-taking ceremony at 9.30 am on August 9.

All students, faculty members and non-teaching staff are to participate in it.

The pledge format will soon be uploaded on the UGC website.

To commemorate the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and the events that occurred at the time, the HRD ministry and the UGC are working to organise various on-campus events.

“Universities have been asked to hold activities, such as talks by eminent educators, declamations and debates, anytime from August 9 to 30. The initiative will be called ‘New India Manthan’,” said the UGC order.

The aims is to sensitise students towards the freedom struggle, especially the Quit India Movement, which gave an impetus to the nation’s fight for its independence.

Faculty members have been requested to conduct guided tours to freedom memorials and houses of martyrs from the military, the para-military and the police, to help the youngsters appreciate the sacrifices that have been made to preserve the integrity of the country.

The varsities will also organise a quiz competition based on the contribution of freedom fighters and the notable events of that era, and encourage active participation from students.

Details of the competition will also be available soon on the UGC website and on wvvw.mygov.in. Students can answer both in online and offline modes.

The UGC has urged universities and affiliated colleges to publicise the events so that people are aware of the activities taking place during the month.

The UGC letter reads, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi endeavours to have a terrorism-free, caste-free, corruption-free, uncleanness-free and povertyfree society. This will actualise only with the help of the society.”
