Girl drowns as flood situation remains grim in Bahraich

BAHRAICH: Flood situation continues to remain grim in Mahsi, Qaiserganj and Nanpara tehsils of the district. Floodwater entered hundreds of villages in the area in the last couple of days, rendering a large number of people homeless. Meanwhile, a 12-year-old girl Savita drowned in floodwater in Godhaiya village in Qaiserganj on Saturday night. Besides, nine villages in Qaiserganj tehsil are in the grip of flood due to rise in the Ghaghra river.

Owing to the sudden rise in the Ghaghra and Saryu rivers, a population of over 32000 people has been affected in the above-mentioned three tehsils of the district. The worst affected is Mahsi tehsil where 18 villages are facing the natural calamity. In Nanpara, 19 villages are facing flood.

The Ghaghra is flowing 67 cm above the danger mark at Elgin Bridge and .115 cm at Ghoor Devi point. Crops on 9590 hectare land have been damaged due to the flood. Another 1200 hectare of agricultur­al land is submerged in floodwater­s.

A road connecting Gujratipur­wa to Banudi in Shivpur block under Nanpara tehsil has been cut off for about four metres owing to the spate in the Saryu river. Similarly villagers in Qayampur, Golaganj, Pipri, Baundi, Pachdevri, Bahduriya, Nakdilpur, Behta and Siraiya Churamani are facing the flood wrath due to spate in the Ghaghra.

Thousands of people have taken shelter on the embankment of Belha-Behrauli dam to save their lives. Additional district magistrate (ADM) Santosh Kumar Ray said the district administra­tion was making all efforts to rescue the affected people. The ADM said 22 flood outposts were set up and 89 boats and motor boats were pressed into service to rescue and help those in the grip of flood.
