Vinayak Agarwal wins snooker title in style

LUCKNOW: Reigning State champion Vinayak Agarwal annexed the snooker title of the third Nawab Emaduddin Ashraf Memorial Tournament, defeating India No 3 and Asian gold medalist Malkeet Singh 4-3, at the Oudh Gymkhana Club here late on Saturday night.

Despite losing the first two frames 31-84, 34-70, a determined Vinayak displayed his superb skills to bounce back, winning the next two frames 63-48, 67-45 to level the score 2-all.

The drama didn’t stop here as in the next frame, local challenger Malkeet did his best to win it by 66-26, but thereafter it was Vinayak, who dictated terms on his conditions to clinch the remaining two frames to wrest the title in style.

In fact trailing by 26 points Malkeet got a golden chance to clear the sixth frame, but Vinayak potted the yellow ball to put an end on Malkeet’s comeback journey.

Earlier, Vinayak outplayed UP No 3 Amit Arora 37-59, 71-8, 67-21 and 52-18, whereas Malkeet proved too good for young Ashar Abrar before winning at 66-29, 69-09 and 57-43. 1990 World billiards champion Manoj Kothari gave away the prizes.

FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Police Boys and Shiv Football Club notched up contrastin­g wins to collect full points in the District Football League-2017, at the Chowk Stadium here on Sunday. Police Boys defeated RA Boys 4-2, while Shiv FC outplayed YFC Aliganj 2-1.

For Police Boys, Mohit struck a hat-trick as he scored in the 42nd, 47th and 52nd miniutes respective­ly after Tariq scoring the opening goal in the 39th minute. Prajwal struck both the goals for the RA Boys .

Kabeer and Aman shared a goal each for Shiv Football Club in the second match of the day, whereas Aditya netted the only goal for the YFC Aliganj.
