BAREILLY: Two teenage sisters were allegedly doused in petrol and set ablaze by unidentified assailants in Nawabganj area of Bareilly early Friday, said police.

The victims were admitted to the district hospital with reportedly 60% second and third degree burns. The Nawabganj police registered an FIR and are investigating the case together with the crime branch. Gulshan, 19, and Fiza, 17, of Deorania Jahangir village were sleeping in the courtyard when they were attacked.

Their father, Nassruddin Ahmed, who was sleeping in an adjoining room, said, “The girls started shouting. I woke up and saw them burning. I have never heard anyone cry out like that...they were burning like dry wood.” The parents tried to douse the fire using blankets, but by the time they did so, the girls were severely burnt. However, hospital sources said the victims were out of danger now.

“An FIR was registered under 307 (attempt to murder) and other sections of the IPC. Additional charges will be added as the investigation progresses,” said SP Bareilly Joginder Kumar.

“Prima facie, it seems the attackers entered the house through the outer door, which was reportedly left open. Our teams are interrogating kin and neighbours for more details,” said Kumar. Police also recovered two mobile phones from the spot. “We are trying to identify the people who contacted the victims before the incident. Two such men have been summoned to the police station for quizzing,” he added.
