The Uttar Pradesh STF on Tuesday arrested the former principal of Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College Rajiv Mishra and his wife Poornima Shukla from Saket Nagar area of Kanpur in connection with the death of children due to disruption in oxygen supply. The STF handed over the doctor couple to Gorakhpur police. The arrests are the first in the Gorakhpur tragedy in which over 30 children died at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College this month.
The UP STF on Tuesday arrested the former principal of Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College Rajiv Mishra and his wife Poornima Shukla from Saket Nagar area of Kanpur in connection with the death of children due to disruption in oxygen supply.
Two teams of the special task force (STF) raided the house and arrested the doctor couple who had been on the run after FIRs were lodged against them.
The STF handed over the doctor couple to Gorakhpur police.
SSP, Gorakhpur, Siddharth Aniruddh Pankaj told media persons that the doctor couple were being brought to the city.
He said police teams had been constituted to ensure the arrest of the remaining accused.
Pankaj said the police were trying to contact the accused and asking them to join the investigation. “They have been asked to get their statements recorded. If they do not cooperate in investigation, stern action will be taken against them,” the SSP added.
The arrests are the first in the Gorakhpur tragedy in which over 30 children died at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College this month.
Dr Mishra and his wife were named in the FIR lodged on the basis of a preliminary inquiry carried into the incident by UP chief secretary Rajive Kumar.
The FIR was lodged at the Hazratganj police station under section 409, 308, 120 (b) and 420 of the IPC. Besides, section 7/13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and section 15 of the Indian Medical Council Act have also been slapped on the accused.
Gorakhpur police had also conducted raids on Monday night in search of the accused named in the FIR.
