LUCKNOW: Several teachers, who were staging a protest to demand regularisation of jobs, were injured in lathi-charge near Vidhan Bhawan on Tuesday.
The incident took place around 12.30 pm when over 1,000 teachers demanding job regularisation for past several years gathered around Vidhan Bhawan and blocked the road causing inconvenience to commuters.
An officer-bearer of Shikshak Kalyan Samiti, Rajiv Kumar said the police cane-charged teachers who were peacefully protesting to press for their demands of job regularisation. He said the police treated teachers as criminal and chased them away.
“Cops did not even spare women teachers and open baton charge on them. It caused stampede like situation during which several teachers were injured and are now undergoing treatment in different hospitals in the city,” he claimed.
Inspector Hazratganj Anand Shahi said the protestors had blocked the road leading to traffic chaos in Hazratganj and surrounding areas. He said the protestors were first requested to remove the blockade as it was causing inconvenience to commuters.
He said the protestors were asked to present their memorandum to district authorities, who assured to forward it the state government but they were not ready to end their protest. He said mild force was used after multiple attempts to remove the road blockade failed.
He claimed nobody was injured and protestors were successfully removed after a marathon effort of two hours.
