VARANASI: Twelve people, including six police personnel, sustained injuries as students resorted to stone-pelting and set four vehicles afire after a truck mowed down their fellow student in Mohammadabad Gohna area of eastern UP’s Mau district on Saturday, police said.
A roadways bus and a truck were among the vehicles set afire. The windows of two vehicles were smashed.
Police said a truck laden with bananas hit Pushpankar Yadav and and Abdul Raheem, class 12 students of AHNV Institute, on the Ballia-Lucknow highway. Pushpankar died on the spot. Abdul Rahim sustained critical injuries.
Police said locals and other students rushed Abdul Raheem to a hospital nearby. Flying into a rage, the students set four vehicles on fire. They broke window panes of several other vehicles.
The angry students also beat up Purushottam Gupta, the truck driver. He sustained severe injuries and was admitted to the hospital, police said.
Police said reinforcements were called from various police stations in the district. Seeing the security personnel, the students resorted to stone pelting in which 12 people —sub-inspector SK Pandey, five constables, four passengers and two journalists — were injured.
The melee continued for about four hours on Ballia-Lucknow road.
Superintendent of police Abhishek Yadav, along with heavy police force, reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
Mohammadabad circle officer Anil Kumar said the situation was ‘completely normal’. After post-mortem, the body of the student was handed over to his kin.
As a precautionary measure, the local police have been asked to keep a strict vigil in the area at night. Further probe is on.
