LUCKNOW: Manufacturers and sellers of illicit liquor will face death sentence or life imprisonment if its consumption leads to death or permanent disability to the people in Uttar Pradesh.
Governor Ram Naik on Wednesday promulgated the Uttar Pradesh Excise (Amendment) Ordinance 2017 that provides for stringent punishments.
As the state legislature was not in session, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet presided over by chief minister Yogi Adityanath had recently approved and sent the ordinance for the Governor’s approval .
A Raj Bhawan communique said section 60 (A) had been added to the state excise law to provide for capital punishment or life imprisonment or a penalty of R 10 lakh or both to manufacturers and sellers of illicit liquor if its consumption led to death or permanent disability.
The state government appears to have followed the Gujarat model on the new law. As Gujarat chief minister, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had introduced the provision for capital punishment for such offences in 2011. A provision for life imprisonment and death penalty may act as deterrent in Uttar Pradesh as well.
