Violence after BSP man shot dead

ALLAHABAD: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Rajesh Yadav was shot dead outside Tarachand Hostel near Allahabad University here on Monday night, police said.

Preliminar­y probe revealed that Rajesh Yadav, 46, had gone to the hostel with his supporters and the owner of a nursing home Dr Mukul Singh where he had a dispute with some people.

On the complaint of Yadav’s wife Monica, an FIR was lodged against Dr Mukul Singh and his accomplice­s. Chaos prevailed in areas around Allahabad University and CMP Degree College as Yadav’s supporters created ruckus and torched a roadways bus on Tuesday morning.

SSP Anand Kulkarni and senior police officials controlled the situation with the help of Rapid Action Force (RAF).

A dozen people, including policemen and media persons, were injured in stone-pelting by Yadav’s supporters. Heavy force was deployed near Indian Press Crossing to control the situation.

On Tuesday morning, Dr Singh informed the police that he was with Rajesh Yadav at Tarachand Hostel when they had an altercatio­n with some drunken youths.

“The youths pelted us with stones and opened fire on Yadav’s SUV. Yadav also fired in retaliatio­n with his licensed pistol and tried to flee the scene. However, he received a bullet injury in his abdomen and collapsed,” Dr Singh said. He was rushed to a private hospital where he died. Dr Mukul Singh went missing after giving his statement to the police. Inspector at Colonelgan­j police station Awadhesh Singh said Dr Singh’s version of the sequence of events was corroborat­ed by a few eye-witnesses.

SP (city) Siddharth Shankar Meena the doctor would be nabbed soon. “Some empty cartridges were also found in Yadav’s vehicle,” he said. Yadav’s wife Monica alleged that the role of Dr Singh was suspicious as her husband died in firing but Dr Singh escaped unhurt.
