Additional chief secretary Raj Pratap Singh on Monday met the students at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) hostels and assessed the situation on the campus.

Several students, mostly women, were injured in police crackdown on protesters demanding action on a complaint of molestation by a hosteller.

“Singh assessed the situation on the BHU premises and also met some students at Triveni Hostel. The students informed him about the series of events leading to violence and lathicharge on the campus,” a source at the BHU told HT.

Accompanied by a senior intelligence officer, Singh also visited the spot where the incident of sexual harassment took place.

He inspected the Mahila Mahavidyalaya gate and the spot where students were canecharged. Singh also called on some of the professors and discussed the situation with them.

He also met the officials who were on duty at the time of violence and lathi-charge.

Singh will brief chief minister Yogi Adityanath about the details of the incident and the situation on the campus.

Singh’s visit was kept confidential. He did not interact with media persons and even the district administration officials came to know about his visit only after he reached the university.
