India juniors to play in Babu hockey

LUCKNOW: It would be the best practice opportunit­ies for India players before the 7th Sultan of Johar Cup Junior Men’s Hockey Tournament (October 22-29) at Malaysia, when they rub shoulders with top domestic players in the 37th All-India KD Singh ‘Babu’ Hockey Tournament, starting Thursday, at the Padamshree Mohd Shahid stadium here in Gomti Nagar.

In all 12 teams, including Hockey India Junior A and B have confirmed their participat­ion.

Other teams include, Indian Oil (Delhi), Air India (Delhi), SAI (Lucknow), Army XI, Punjab National Bank (Delhi), Indian Air Force, Combined Hostel, Punjab Police (Jalandhar), South Central Railway (Secunderab­ad) and Sports Hostel (Bhubneshwa­r).

Organising secretary, Jitendra Yadav said that tournament would be played on league-cumknock-out basis and two top teams from four different pools would be playing in the semi-finals. The final is slated for October 11.

The tournament, which offers Rs 2 lakh to winners, Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 to first three place holders, would see Air India taking on Combined Hostel in the opening match at 11.00 a.m. on Thursday. This will be followed by Indian Air Force vs Hockey India Junior B at 2.00 p.m., and SAI Lucknow vs Army XI at 3.30 p.m.

THRILLING DRAW

Sports Hostel Girls A split points with Veterans XI after playing 1-1 draw in the SN Kapoor Memorial Mix Hockey Tournament, at the CB Gupta Khel Maiden here on Tuesday. Rashid scored for Veterans XI in the 20th minute, whereas Sonal restored parity in the 49th minute. Final is slated for Wednesday.

OPEN CHESS

Pawan Batham scored 4.5 points emerged victorious in the Open Chess Tournament here. KK Khare and Anand Prakash finished second and third, respective­ly. Skand Tripathi in under-16 and Aryan Pandey in under-12 won titles.

ANSAL TRIUMPH

Varanasi’s Ansal Yadav defeated Abhiyansh Singh of UPBA 21-18, 21-12 to win the men’s singles title of the Sr State Badminton Championsh­ip here. Amolika Singh bagged the women’s singles crown, defeating Mansi Singh 20-22, 22-20, 21-17.

TWENTY20 CRICKET

Jyoti Club scored an emphatic 101-run win against Kriative Club in a league match of the 1st Rajendra Prasad Memorial Twenty20 Cricket Tournament, at the Pt Raas Bihari Tewari stadium here. In other match of the day, Panthers Academy defeated Kalpana Foundation by seven wickets.

ANIKET SHINES

Aniket took a hat-trick as Jaipuria Cricket Academy defeated UCA by seven wickets to make it to the semi-finals of the 2nd PP Dua Memorial Under-16 Cricket Tournament here. Aniket and Yash Rao shared eight wickets between them as UCA collapsed for 89 and in reply, JCA romped home in 18 overs.

SELECTION

The district under-14 and under-19 schools boys and girls basketball teams selection will take place on Thursday, at the Modern Academy here in Gomti Nagar at 9.00 a.m.
