Police lathi-charge protestors in front of CM office

LUCKNOW: Several people were injured when the police lathicharg­ed hundreds of education department employees, under the dependents category, who were protesting in front of the CM Secretaria­t office at Lal Bahadur Shashtri building on Wednesday.

The protestors were obstructin­g the road before the movement of chief minister Yogi Adityanath who, along with director general of police (DGP) Sulkhan Singh, was reviewing the law and order situation at his office.

Additional superinten­dent of police (ASP), East, Sarvesh Mishra said the education department had provided jobs to most of the dependents under the fourth class category.

“Nearly 500 education employees, however, protested at the Laxman Mela ground, demanding adjustment of deceased education employee dependents as per their qualificat­ion.”

Despite the assurance, the ASP said, around 200 protestors gathered outside the CM office and started raising slogans.

“They refused to remove the road blockage despite multiple efforts, following which mild force was used to chase them away,” he said.

However, a protestor alleged that the sudden lathi-charge caused a stampede-like situation during which several people were injured.

“Many of us lost our shoes and other belongings in a bid to escape the lathi-charge,” he said.

The protestors have threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike if their demands are not met.
