LUCKNOW: A major tragedy was averted when a speeding private engineering college bus, ferrying 45 people, turned turtle on city outskirts in Banthra here on Saturday morning. Ten engineering students were injured in the incident. While nine were discharged after receiving first aid, one student had to be admitted to a private hospital and continues to be under treatment.

B Tech first year students of Azad Engineering College of Bijnore, Banthra, were travelling in their college bus to appear for their semester examination at another engineering college -Ambalika Institute in Sisendi, Mohanlalganj when the mishap occurred.

Some of the students said bus driver Mohd Sadiq seemed to be upset ever since he started from the college campus and was driving very fast. The driver’s helper Mohd Shafiq asked him to slow down twice, but he did not comply. Sadiq reportedly lost control of the vehicle at a sharp turn near Anoopkheda village and the bus got into a roadside pit, eventually turning turtle.

The injured were identified as Mohd Afzal, Abdul Raheem, Ansar Mohammed, Zaheer, Tushar, Haider Ali, Mohd Shadab, Muzammil Ahmad, Anand and Himanshu. Most of the students suffered minor bruises and were rushed to the examination centre soon after being given first aid. One Ansar Mohammed is still being treated for his injuries.

Taking cognizance of students’ complaints, the college administration suspended the bus driver and ordered an inquiry. No police complaint was lodged till the last reports came in.
