KANPUR: A 42-year-old man with dextrocardia situs inverses (DSI)-- a rare medical condition that involves complete trans position( right to left) of all abdominal organs-- died at LLR Hospital here on Sunday night due to liver complications.

This was a first such case received by the LLR Hospital, an associate hospital of the GSVM Medical College, and now the doctors are planning to do in depth research about the rare medical condition.

The head of the department of medicines at the GSVM Medical College Dr Prem Singh said the DSI is characterised by abnormal positioning of the heart. In this condition, the tip of the heart (apex) is positioned on the right side of the chest. Additionally, the position of the heart chambers as well as the visceral organs such as the liver and spleen is reversed (situs inversus). However, most affected individuals can live a normal life without associated symptoms or disability.

Dr Singh said the patient, hailing from Kanpur, was admitted to the LLR on January 1 with complaints of chest congestion and blood vomiting. He also had some liver infection.

During treatment the X-Ray, Ultrasound and the MRI reports revealed that his vital organs were not in normal position.

On that basis doctors started treatment but could not save him.

Dr Singh said the most important thing was that he did not have any serious health problem earlier. The HOD of anatomy department of the GSVM Dr Surendra Singh said so far three kind of abnormal body structures were recorded.
