LUCKNOW : The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) plans to celebrate party chief Mayawati’s 62nd birthday on January 15 as Jankalyankari Diwas’.

Besides cutting cakes, the party workers will distribute blankets among the poor across the state.

The party workers will also visit hospitals to distribute fruits and edible items among the patients.

Talking to HT, BSP state unit president Ramachal Rajbhar said the party could not celebrate the birthday of ‘behanji’ (Mayawati) with the usual gaiety in 2017 due to implementation of the model code of conduct for the state assembly elections.

“This year we have decided to celebrate her birthday with pomp in all 75 districts and 403 assembly constituencies of the state,” he said.

The BSP has been celebrating Mayawati’s birthday as ‘Jankalyankari Diwas’ after losing power in the 2012 assembly election.

“The party leaders assist the needy, the poor and the handicapped. They also visit Dalit hamlets and hospitals to distribute fruits and blankets. among the poor,” he said.

Mayawati is likely to release the 13th edition of her book, A Travelogue of My Struggle Ridden Life and BSP Movement, and a missionary calendar of the party at the state unit office.

The birthday bash of the party chief used to be a big occasion for party workers when the BSP was in power.

In 2010, when Mayawati was Chief Minister there was a con-

troversy over the gift of a cash garland worth several crore rupees by party leaders.

In 2008, the murder of PWD executive engineer Manoj Kumar Gupta in Auraiya allegedly by BSP MLA Shekhar Tiwari during a donation campaign generated controversy.

A BSP leader who did not wish to be named said demonetisation had also played spoilsport. Before each birthday of Mayawati, the party used to launch a massive fund raising campaign across the state. Each MP and MLA was given a money collection target.

To keep the supporters upbeat, Mayawati had directed leaders to celebrate the birthday in the district unit office as well as public places in all the assembly constituencies.

Party leaders and workers will take a pledge to ensure win the 2019 Lok Sabha election as a return gift, said an office bearer.
