MEERUT: Upset over growing incidents of attacks by cow vigilantes, a BSP corporator has handed over his cow to the Nauchandi police station here.

Abdul Gaffar, a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) corporator from ward 73 and a resident of Manzoor Nagar locality here, said he had no option but to hand over the cow to save himself from attacks by cow vigilantes or landing in jail for no fault of his.

He said his sister had gifted him the cow two years ago.

On Tuesday, he along with family members and a few neighbours reached the Nauchandi police station and requested the SHO Sanjay Kumar to keep the cow as he didn’t feel safe under the prevailing condition.

He requested Kumar to give it an individual or organisation who could take care of her.

He was given a receipt by the police. Speaking to HT over the phone, Gaffar said he had explained to the SHO that the cow should be given to only someone who could take care of her.

“I will go and check her wellbeing every month,” said Gaffar, who said it was indeed a difficult decision for him.

He clarified that his act had nothing to do with his party as it was his personal decision.

SP (city) Maan Singh Chauhan said though the corporator had handed over his cow to Nauchandi police, it would be returned to him.

Gaffar, however, is adamant and doesn’t want to take it back.
