LUCKNOW: Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday said there was a need to improve law and order situation in UP and asked chief minister Yogi Adityanath to act against (illicit) firearms that were the root cause of the problem.

“Law and order situation will have to be improved. All those having a gun should return it. I want to tell this to the chief minister… a large number of people have (illicit) arms. Why do they need (illicit) guns? (Improving) law and order situation should be the top priority,” Naidu said while inaugurating the first Uttar Pradesh Divas at Awadh Shilp Gram with governor Ram Naik and chief minister Yogi Adityanath.

He said it would not be easy as UP was equal to six states in size.

“India is marching ahead on the path of development. UP also needs to surge ahead. Firearms are the main reason for recent incidents (of crime). Those having illicit firearms should return them first,” he said.

“I know some people will be angry and feel bad. They will ask what advise did I give to the chief minister…and what will happen to us? Nothing will happen. Some have a gun and some do not have it. This is the problem,” Naidu said.

He lauded Yogi for organising Uttar Pradesh Divas and trying to bring about development in the state.

Yogi decided to organise the 68th foundation day of the state as UP Divas on the governor’s suggestion that 24 states were celebrating their foundation day and UP should follow suit.

VENKAIAH NAIDU, Vice-President

On January 24, 1950, the United Provinces was renamed Uttar Pradesh through a notification by the then governor general of India.

Addressing the programme, the CM said his government hoped to bring investments to the tune of Rs 3 lakh crore during the Uttar Pradesh Investors’ Summit to be held in Lucknow on February 21-22.

Yogi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi would lay the foundation stone of Purvanchal Expressway in March this year and the state government proposed to open the expressway in 24 months.

“Our effort will be to ensure that the state’s youth does not go out in search of jobs and Uttar Pradesh becomes the most prosperous state,” he said after the launch of ‘One district, one product’ scheme along with the schemes of 40 departments worth Rs 25,000 crore.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Yogi government’s decision to hold UP Divas celebrations at Awadh Shilp Gram that was constructed during the tenure of Akhilesh Yadav, the SP’s official handle tweeted: “We are proud that UP Divas is being organised at Awadh Shilp Gram that came up under the SP government.”

“We got thousands of flats constructed for middle-class people near the venue. The government should inform people when it would provide an infrastructure that could become the venue of UP Divas,” the twitter post said.
