Himanshu wins snooker title

LUCKNOW: Young Himanshu Kukretti won the UP Open handicap snooker tournament, defeating former state no 1 Arbaz 4-3 in a thrilling final at the Green Baize here. After winning the first two frame by 73-56 and 81-49, Himanshu lost back-to-back frames 40-70, 36-69, before scripting 61-31, 61-75 and 59-31 in further frames to emerge victorious. Earlier in semis, Himanshu beat Shubham Mehrotra and Arbaz beat Amit Arora 3-1 each.

GOOD START

Hosts Uttar Pradesh judokas staged a fine show and won three gold medals on the opening day of the national judo championsh­ip for visually impaired here on Friday. Jagdish won in the below 30 kg category, whereas Chandra Prakash and Rati Mishra excelled in the below 45 and below 48 kg categories.

OPEN CHESS

The two-day Ram Saran Adhaulia Memorial open chess tournament begins here on Saturday. The tournament will be played under Swiss system and FIDE rules in five rounds. A sum of Rs 5000 will be distribute­d among top ten prize winners.

FINE BATTING

Openers Saurabh Terpal and Manikant Kumar struck unbeaten half centuries as Abhijeet Sinha Gymkhana Academy trounced Lucknow White Cricket Club by 10 wickets in a league match of the Vishramum Challenge Cup cricket tournament here. Saurabh made 39-ball 55 with the help of nine fours and a six, whereas Manikant hit 48-ball 50, which contained nine fours, as ASGA romped home in 14.1 overs while chasing 133 in 35 overs.

Girls XI defeated Boys XI 2-1 in a hockey match, organized on the occasion of birth anniversar­y of Kunwar Digvijay Singh ‘Babu’ at the CB Gupt ground here on Friday.

TENNIS TOURNEY

The Metro Zone tennis tournament would begin on Saturday, at the Profession­al Tennis Academy here. Over 250 players from all parts of the country have confirmed their participat­ion in the event, which offers Rs 1.25 lakh as prize money.
