UPCA enter Justice Dwivedi cricket semi-finals

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Cricket Associatio­n marched into the semi-finals of the 12th All-India Justice SN Dwivedi Memorial cricket tournament, defeating Nagpur’s Karim Sports on the spin of coin after their quarterfin­al tie was hit by bad weather on Sunday.

While chasing 307 in 45 overs, Karim Sports were 14/2 in 17 overs when the rain stopped play, at the Madan Mohan Malviya stadium in Allahabad, and in the spin of coin, UPCA emerged victorious.

Openers Abhishek Goswami (66), Almas Shaukat (78) and Madhav Kaushik (94) made full use of the placid wicket after being sent to bat first as UPCA piled up 306/8 in 45 overs.

Jitendra Sharma and Himanshu Lalwani shared four wickets between them. On Monday, Defence Accounts Sports Control Board will take on Air India.

BIG WINS

It was a day of big wins for the two teams of the Jaipuria Cricket Academy in the Under-12 Champions Trophy cricket tournament here on Sunday. JCA ‘Red’ defeated SDS Juniors by 121 runs, whereas JCA Blue defeated Excellia Cricket Academy by seven wickets.

Sameer with four points emerged victorious in under-19 category of the prodigy chess tournament here on Sunday. Tanishk Gupta in under-15, Medhansh Saxena in boys under-11 and Riddhima Nigam in girls under-11 too won titles.

DFA’S CLAIM

District Football Associatio­n’s secretary Kanhaya Lal on Sunday accused some schools of the city, including a reputed one, for letting their grounds being used for the conduct of the illegal football events for young boys.

“Even though the UP Football Sangh has banned six, seven and nine-a-side events as they are not at all good for the game, especially at the junior level, some people misusing the grounds of some schools to conduct illegal events,” he states.

He, however, in a letter sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sports minister RS Rathore, UP’s chief minister Yogi Adityanath etc., has demanded immediate action against such people, who are trying to damage the real football culture in India.
